I'm obsessed with RockLove Jewelry. On top of my love for every piece of jewelry she offers (and that I wear my StarTrek stacking ring set every day), Allison Hourcade is my girl boss hero. I'm beyond excited to share this interview with you and introduce you to one of my favorite geeky companies of all time.
When did you really know you wanted to do what you do?
I have always made jewelry, starting with bead looms and bedazzler kits, but it wasn't until I studied abroad in Italy that it seemed like an career possibility. My apprenticeship didn't even afford much creativity - it was about learning the basics in the low-tech historical tradition (pulling wire, hand filing, lost wax casting with crucibles). When I returned to the States, I began an internship for a designer in the New York City diamond district while finishing my last semester of college, an independent study in which I built my own studio and first jewelry collection.
What’s your favorite part of your process?
For nearly a decade, RockLove has been a one-woman show. I've added assistants and larger vendors over the years, but the lion's share - from wax carving to graphics on my site to taping postage to bubble mailers - has been me. Over the past two years, however, with the explosion of licensed merchandise, the team has ballooned and now I have wonderful reliable people with whom to share the workload. This is the first time, in ten years of calling myself a "jewelry designer," in which much of my day is truly devoted to my favorite part of the process: design.
What has surprised you the most about the jewelry business?
It surprises me how much the jewelry industry tends to regurgitate the same silhouettes... when the potential is vast! Historical techniques, styles worn by ancient cultures, ideas borrowed from otherindustries, cutting edge materials. For me, the most exciting challenge is trying to make something innovative, combining the old-world with the new - all while retaining wearability and sophistication.
Can you show us one of your favorite products?
My favorite pieces are always the ones that do something - the Stargate Spinner Ring, the Mass Effect Mass Relay Necklace, the Star Trek Enterprise Ring. There is a slider necklace coming out for Guardians of the Galaxy and a gemstone Serenity ship soon to be released for Firefly. Moving parts, well-placed gemstones, and sentimental references has become RockLove's signature.
Who would win a fight between Captain Picard and Captain Kirk?
That's a tough one, depending on how meta you want to go! Captain Kirk is all brawn, and would win in a wrestling match, but Captain Picard is far to classy and intellectual for a show of physical strength. In which case Lieutenant Commander Worf may battle in his stead, which makes it Kirk vs. Worf. However if it's a battle of wits, then Mr. Spock be there to advise Kirk... in which case then it would be Picard vs. Spock, which would be a very different fight. Either way, we can all agree that Picard would win sexiest legs.
What do you nerd out on the most?
All the things, but mostly history, fantasy, and space. Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Firefly, and Star Trek are my favorite franchises, though I'm also a life-long Disney and Pixar lover. Just the other day, someone said "Savages!" on a commercial and I immediately started singing the song from Pocahontas... and yesterday in-office I was muttering the jingle for Cruella de Vil. I can't remember the lines to my favorite Top 40 song but Disney lyrics are burned into my brain.
What’s your favorite show to binge watch?
It's not a show in particular but a genre... sort of? It probably has a more correct name, but I most love 90's Sci-Fi and Y2K era movies like Hackers, The Cell, The Fifth Element, Demolition Man, Cube, Thir13en Ghosts. Dystopian futures and revolutionary tech!
Where do you like to hang out online / where can we find you?
To celebrate RockLove's 10 Year Anniversary, we're launching a massive website refresh in May - an all new look with more focus on the licensed jewelry collaborations. At this time, we'll be unveiling the Guardians of the Galaxy, Firefly, and Twin Peaks official jewelry collections!
